security problems

I'd been using awstats for a while, and it seemed nice enough. However,
there seems to be a pretty serious security hole:

The changelog and the FreeBSD port seem to indicate that the bug is in
6.2, and is fixed in 6.3. However, freshmeat, sourceforge, and the BSD
ports system (after a fresh cvsup) don't seem to show any signs that 6.3
actually exists.
Some clarification from the developer would be very helpful. I'm looking
for a different program now.

True, the first security hole in AWStats life was found in december but
was fixed two days after.
You can download stable 6.3 from AWStats web site to fix it.

Amazing

I set up the latest release, 6.0 (build 1.699) because I love to live on
the edge. For 4 virtual hosts, I had to do a little tweaking of the Apache
config (the configure.pl only knows how to put the additional lines outside
the virtualhosts containers), but it was worth it; now each site knows its
own config -- E.G. http://family.xxx.yyy.net/awstats/awstats.pl (without
anything extra) knows to use the correct config file, as do my other
virtual sites. Actually, It may know the proper way without the extra
entries in the httpd.conf, I'll have to try. Still, the whole process took
under an hour, and that involved un-gzipping old log files to run in on the
initial runs for each site, and setting up cron jobs. All I have to do now
is put a pre-exec line in my logrotate config files, as I was reminded
while reading the docs (thanks! I surely would have forgotten), and I'm all
set.
Awesome statistics, everything I've ever wanted to know
about my websites.

This program looks great, but the website doesn't seem to give instructions
on installation for us non-techies. There seems to be a few options to
download. What do I download, and where to install?
I own my website, but not the server it is on. It is on a Unix server
with, I believe Apache software. I have logs to read and CGI access. Do I
install it in the CGI folder?

LOVE IT, but...

This program produces a GREAT report and I like the ability to customize it
via the config file.
Just a couple of thoughts:
- An option to disable all hyperlinks on the report would be good - just
produce a pretty report for users to look at - not click on - I doubt most
webmasters want a report on-line that lets users initiate log parsing
routines at will.
- Show IP addresses on report rather than just saying unresolved ip -
especially if I turn off DNS lookups I want to see the IP addresses, not
just a totals line representing all unresolved addresses.
- default config file location might be better placed in a subdirectory
under the current directory rather than /etc especially when you get lots
of domains - it's easy to change though.
- I get a headache reading the code but that's just me - need to "use
strict;"

There is a log parsing only during "update" process.
Even when clicking cgi links there is no read of log file (only awstats
database is read).
Above all with 4.0 there is a new option -staticlinks

/etc/opt/awstats /etc/awstats /etc or current dir

Great Software

Couldn't get Webalizer running properly on a Cobalt RaQ4 so I decided to
give AWStats a try. Wow. AWStats is easy to setup and generates
beautiful, easy-to-read reports. Highly recommended.

AWSTATS Rocks

Awstats rocks. Yet, a minor bug when resolving country names based
on the host name.
If a name has more than one "dot" then AWSTATE is unable do resolve the
originating country. However, this is the best tool I'have tried so far.

What Patrick Baer says is no more true.
Now AWStats doesn't purge your log file by default.
All known bugs of first version are also solved in 2.23.

Lovely program!

Patrick Baer is right in that the program will purge your logs if it got
write access to them. It's a feature, and I recommend against it. But under
normal permissions (i.e. if the web server runs the module, and not root),
it won't happen, so just don't run the program under root.
I followed the insturctions in readme.txt and didn't encounter any of the
other problems that Patrick Baer reported. The program requires you to
change the apache log format to "combined", which contains the user-agent
and the referrer.
This program produces a nice and detailed output (although it wouldn't
hurt to supply details on pages that cause errors other than 404), and it
doesn't require installing extra perl modules, unlike PerlWebStats.

Great !!! Better than webalizer

I was very surpised how easy it is to use it.
I setup AWStats in 2 minutes and my log are more precise than
webaliser (i used it before using AWStats). What is very great is the robot
detecyion. I can now know if indexing robots came to see my site, i like
the look and the way informations are shown.

I downloaded Awstats this afternoon and some hours later all I can tell is:
Never touch it!
This program is a real mess, maybe the programmer should spend some
time in re-working on it.
It deletes logfiles if ran as root, can't read those files and so on.
Here's what I experienced:
1) It didn't give me any hits. = Debugged and deleted lines looking
for wrong code which was obviously correct.
2) it stopped telling me my log-format was wrong (apache latest
version btw.) = Verified log-format, 100% correct.
The site has an FAQ-Section, under construction. This program really
looks pretty good and neat, why hasn't it been debugged before released?
I'll switch to anther program now, there are thousands of others and this
one has gone into my 'not-for-use'-trashcan :(

you must be non-techie...
or newbie or just blind
and well... stupid (sorry, just conclusion),
awstats is very good program, with nice documentation
works flawless and is not very hard to configure
did you read tfm?
