i am not pleased with mcabber, so there is no alternative to pidgin ...

gyachi is able to work so why cant sean make this work - I hope google are
getting their worth for investing in our man but hey there is absolutely no
difference per se if u compare the last beta of GAIM and Pidgin - why doll

One change from Gaim to Pidgin i wasn't a fan of
by Enthropy.In.Action - Aug 9th 2007 20:21:06
The only thing I didn't really like when I switched from Gaim to Pidgin was
the fact that the protocol isn't displayed next to the names in the buddy
list anymore.
It's still there when you open the IM window, and when you hover the mouse
over the name. If you expand the buddy name it's there too, but I'd rather
not have 2 entries for every person on my buddy list just to easily see
what protocol they're using.
Is there a skin or plugin somewhere that fixes this? Is it at least
possible, even if i have to make my own skin? Why did you decide to change
it? (That last one's not a gripe, just trying to see it your way, dev)

Re: GAIM and Windows Vista
by bogemot - Sep 10th 2007 18:43:22
The most pleasing things I have noticed with gaim are the user interface
and the restructuring of the menus/windows. I have used gaim for about 3
years now, always switching back to it when I tried other clients, even the
other all-in-ones. The simplicity of the application has to be its biggest
draws. You can whine about it not being pretty, but then again you probably
install Window Blinds on your computer to get the new Vista theme. gaim
does exactly what it sets out to do and it does it fast. This is by far my
favorite project on SF!

Yes, I know what you mean. Compared with Trillian, this is one area where
gaim is weak. I used Trillian on Windows, and one thing I liked about it;
it would reconnect automatically and _transparently_. Gaim does reconnect,
but you are correct--it is not transparent to the user; it pops up a
dialog.
A workaround might be available for certain window managers. I use Window
Maker, which has the ability to "hide" all windows belonging to an
application (such as Gaim). So I usually hide Gaim when I'm not using it;
when new windows appear (including the connection windows), they are
automatically hidden as well, so they do not interrupt my work. Note that
this is not the same as the Gaim tray icon.

It looks like the latest version, 2.0.0beta1 does not do this pop-up
window reconnect thing anymore. I'd say to try it out. When I tried, it did
not do any popups on reconnect. However, I could not get it to "detect"
when the link was broken. My messages just appeared to send anyway--but
then they were never actually sent.

Message Notification Problem
by Piobaire - Aug 2nd 2005 00:45:09
Hey, Love gaim but there's one annoyance. Here's the situation as of
1.3.1:
- gaim has a message window open
- the message window is minimized
- a person contacts me with a new IM in the open window
- the taskbar doesn't show a new message waiting. I have to bring gaim to
the foreground to find out the new person has IM'd me.
This is really annoying to me and the people trying to reach me.

MSN connection fails with 0.59.8
by hitpats - Jan 28th 2003 15:56:15
Hi,
I run gaim on Solaris. I was on version 0.59 using which I used to be able
to connect to both Yahoo and MSN. Sometime back, I started getting the
popup ' 'my id' has been signed off: Unable to read' when trying to log on
to yahoo.
So today I upgraded to 0.59.8 after reading reports that the problem has
been fixed in the release. I am able to log on to yahoo, but the messages I
send end up garbled on the other end. With MSN I get the error
'Authentication failed'.
Any other patches ? Still untested on Solaris ? Please help.

I started getting the "authentication failed" error message when
connecting to MS Messenger a few days ago too. I figured it might be
connected with the recent MS SQL Server "worm" attack but a Windows machine
I have connects to Messenger just fine. I did update to the latest gaim
version but that didn't help.
I did run out of disk space on this (Slackware 8.0) machine around the
same time, but after fixing that problem, setting up the account in gaim
repeatedly, and even rebooting (duh, it works for Windows), gaim still gets
the same error.

Re: MSN connection fails with 0.59.8
by Maknock - Feb 14th 2003 15:48:08
I had this same problem on Solaris 8 with this version of Gaim. Thinking
that there may have been a significant difference between my setup and what
was in the binary, I downloaded the source (nightly CVS tar) and
dependancies and did a manual build.
So far I have been successful in connecting to MSN. Though this is going
off the basis that only my msn buddy list shows up. (no one was online for
me to verify with :) ) I will hopefully be able to verify that it is
working within the next day or two.
I woiuld have to think either a patch was applied into the cvs repository
which I acquired with the nightly build or there was something on my
machine causing a problem with the binary.
In regards to the build if you do decide to build manually I had
difficulties with the make process until I ran configure with the following
switch: --disable-screensaver
Hope this helps

gaim-applet 0.59.3 RPM
by Poncho - Sep 27th 2002 14:56:49
Hi. I installed the GAIM 0.59.3 RPM in order to fix my Yahoo connection
problem, and while it worked great and certainly fixed the problem, I lost
the gaim-applet that was automatically installed with my Red Hat 7.3
distribution.
A few minutes ago I tried downloading the RPM for gaim-applet from
sourceforge.net, but when I tried to install it I get a bunch of conflicts
with the files from package gaim-0.59.3-1, which would make sense, since
the gaim-applet RPM I downloaded is named gaim-applet-0.59.1-2.i386.rpm.
This is the same name as the RPM for version 0.59.1; however, that's the
link that appears in section gaim-applet, subsection 0.59.3 at the GAIM
download page at SourceForge (hey, that sounded kinda lawyery :-).
Could this be an error in the download page at SF? I already tried
manipulating the link so I'll download a file named (...)0.59.3-1.i386.rpm
(among other variations), but I get a message saying such files don't
exist. So, what can I do to get a working gaim-applet version 0.59.3?

I'd just like to let everyone know that I found the answer to this question

should prove interesting to anyone with the same problem.
If your finger is too tired from surfing to check the link out, basically
it says to get it (for the time being) from
http://irg.cs.ohiou.edu/~eblanton/gaim-dist/ .

New to Linux
by praveen - Sep 16th 2002 12:44:23
Hello,
I just loaded Redhat v 7.3 on my machine, and I can't understand how to
add/remove programs in Linux. I am a 10-year veteran of Windows and know
forwards and backwards how applications like Instant Messenger are
installed, updated, and removed on Windows.
However On Linux, I have GAIM version .53, but it was not connection to
the yahoo server...I tried both cs and scs.yahoo.com port 5050, so I tried
to download GAIM version .59.3 (the lastest one I think)
!) I downloaded the .GZ file and placed it in my home directory, after
extracting the latest version .59.
2) I ran the four steps in the Install file located in the folder.
3) I reloaded the protocols, and restarted GAIM.
Now when I look at the ABOUT on GAIM, it still says version .53, and I am
still unable to connect to yahoo. Do I have to manually replace the files
in all the directories that GAIM is in, i.e. /etc/home, /usr/local/bin,
/usr/local/man.
Can some please help, as I am beginning to get frustrated.
Thank You

From the looks of it, it appears that your previous version of GAIM was
installed as an RPM in your sistem. If this is so, you should first try to
uninstall the RPM for version 0.53. To do this, run the program
"kpackage", and search for "gaim". If you do find it, uninstall it.
Then, try installing again the new version (you're right, the latest is
0.59.3). If you are indeed a newbie, and you've got a Red Hat system, the
easiest way to do it is via RPM. Just download it from the link further up
in this page that says "RPM package", and use kpackage to install it, or
run the command "rpm -i gaim-0.59.3-1.i386.rpm" in the shell.
Good luck.

Thanks, Rob! I downloaded the 0.59.3 RPM, and now it works great with
Yahoo! A note for others with the same problem: unlike other protocols,
when you type in your Yahoo screenname, write only your username,
and not the complete "username@yahoo.com" address.
Again, thanks a lot, Rob! GAIM rocks!

GAIM and YoSucker
by Mondongo - Aug 17th 2002 10:47:30
There's a perl script called YoSucker (you can
find it on FreshMeat) that collides with GAIM. If
you are logged on to the Yahoo! server with GAIM
and you fire up YoSucker, the messaging server
will kick you out and YoSucker will hang, too.
I solved this by turning off the FASTCHECK option
on YoSucker. Weird.

Server based lists
by pherthyl - Jul 20th 2002 02:26:20
According to the faq, it seems that Gaim supports server based lists for
Oscar but it (0.58) wont show my old contact list (created from icq 2002a
in windows) when I login. Other programs like Trillian get it just fine so
the list is ok.
Am I mistaken about server based list support?

Re: Server based lists

We actually turned off server side lists for ICQ in version 0.54. In some
cases, it could have caused you not to be able to see any of your
contacts.
We're working on the issue right now, and plan to readd it in 0.60

My online Status Error
by ziwo - Jun 9th 2002 06:39:02
Hi there
I am using Gaim 0.58 under gentoo-linux. Everything is working fine. I can
see the Buddies that I added (ICQ and Yahoo), see there online status, can
send and receive messages, but my ICQ-Friends (only they) can't see MY
online-status. They always saw my status as 'offline'.
I've connected to the 'login.icq.com' at port '5190' with AIM/ICQ
Protokoll. Trying to change my status under
Tools->Away->'myICQAccount'->Online, brings up the following
message in the debug-window:

Info error
by chikin03 - May 8th 2002 18:30:25
Hi, I'm on a LAN up at college, and it won't let me check
others' away messages--and this is a vital part of
communication, as you probably know. Anyways, this is the
sort of thing I get:
<H1>The requested URL 731170_614101 was not found
on this server</H1>
If I keep trying, I usually eventually get a regular report, but
it doesn't list the away message. No proxy, connecting to
toc.oscar.aol.com via port 9898 (default). Help?

You are using the TOC protocol which is not recomended. Go to the account
editor, select your account and click "Modify". Change the
protocol to Oscar (it's AIM/ICQ in newer versions). Then finally, signon to
your account and all should be well.

Probably, the account you have setup for root is set to connect to
scs.yahoo.com and the account you have for the other user is set to connect
to cs.yahoo.com.
Make sure you're using 0.57, and connecting to scs.yahoo.com.

Load the plugin that's specific to the protocol that you want to use.
This will add it to the selection box in the account list. Sorry for any

Consider this a suggestion that you change those to something like
"username" and "label" or something more self-explanatory so
easily-confused folks like me don't get confused. :/

Getting error trying to login to Yahoo chat: "sign on: Unable to read"

Has anyone ever seen this, and does anyone know what it means and how I can

even try the Yahoo Unix client (though I'd rather use Gaim) but it is only

Any ideas folks? I've tried a bunch of "I don't really know what I'm

unloading/reloading the yahoo plugin, upgrading from .50 to .51, etc.
Help!

I am using Gaim 0.59.6 on RH8. Every time I attempt to sign on to Yahoo it
reverts my setting Yahoo 'Pager Host' from cs.yahoo.com to the default(?)
scs.yahoo.com. I have tried manually editing my .gaimrc and the behavior is

I get the identical error. I find that another machine running the same
RedHat 7.2 has the same problems. Turning off IPchains has no effect.
Interestingly the simplistic 'ymessenger' application that one can download
from Yahoo does still work.
I suspect the maketting department has poined out to the programmers at
Yahoo that they're loosing revenue to products like GAIM by missing the
advertising audience.
[tongue firmly planted in cheek] Perhaps someone should write a plugin to
enable all the advertisements that Yahoo profits from.
eg: salesgerbilfromhell.so
Cheers!

Everybuddy indeed "sucks" and is extremely unstable. Every time ICQ is
fucked (a lot!) the program crashes. Gaim is so much nicer. Now for sound
and file transfer and client-side ignores (ICQ spam, no ss ignore =( ) and
this thing rocks.

Everybuddy has crashed on me alot before, but not as
much as Gaim is doing lately. I can't even use Gam for
10 minutes without a crash, _literally_, no word a lie.
I'm comparing everybuddy-0.2.1beta6 to gaim-0.4.4,
and I find everybuddy is more stable. Don't get me wrong
though, I like the features that gaim has, but it's just not
working for me.
Maybe next release the segfaults that I'm experiencing
will disappear, but for now, I'm sticking with EveryBuddy.

I'm running GAIM 0.59.8-1

There's a bug report on this #663757 that I have added to.
The problem started 3 days ago, and happens with both GAIM versions
above. I can't log into Yahoo, and any message coming in from or that I
send to the AIM servers makes the machine lock up tight. I can't even get
to another virutal terminal.
The response was that GAIM can't cause this, it must be a bug with X.
However, the problem didn't start until 3 days ago, with no changes to my
system at all.

Great Client
by Sumit Khanna - Jun 20th 2001 09:43:44
Gaim is the best AIM client I've seen out there
for Linux. It's much better than the standard
AIM/Linux and supports almost every messaging
service known right out of the box (preincluded
plugins). I've also noticed a difference in the
new verion (pre14), specifically in the way it no
longer seg faults randomly for no aparent reason
:) This is a Grade A program for anyone who has
friends on more than one messaging service.

0.9.2 Away Messages
by prSpectiv2 - Aug 18th 2000 20:03:02
The oscar connection seems to work fine on my box, but I found that the
away messages go flaky sometimes. Usually after saving a new away message
any other ones that were stored got erased and overwritten by the new
message's text. The title of the old messages stay the same but the
content is wiped out.
Not like it's the most important thing but I just thought I should post
it. It's a great app anyway.

Small Suggestion
by Matt - Mar 30th 2001 19:18:10
I'm using the latest version of gAIM right now (0.11.0pre9), and I'm
absolutely loving the tabbed conversation windows. I have one small
suggestion, though. When I double-click someone's name to start an IM, it
adds that person's tab to my conversation window and brings that tab up.
But the conversation window doesn't receive the focus like the non-tabbed
version. It would be better if the conversation window got the focus upon
starting a new IM.

Same Here
by Murley - Jul 31st 2000 09:13:56
I am getting the same problems he describes above. I also noticed that if
you receive a file , when you save it, if you click ok with the filename
blank, gaim dies altogether. In the save window as well, if you change to a
different directory, the filename in the windowd is lost, and you have to
retype it. If you don't catch that, and click save, you run into the
problem i've noticed, gaim dieing. Great Prog!

0.9.20 Buggy???
by DrunkNkoRn - Jul 20th 2000 19:41:18
Anyone else having problems with connection bugs??
With both the Oscar and Toc protocols 0.9.20 seems to die 4 out of 5
connection attempts.....and then of course...the 5th time i connect, i get
the..."You've been connecting and disconnecting too frequently" error from
AOL....
I seem to always get the error message about messages being sent too
quickly...and then i either get disconnected.....or gaim just dies...
For now I think i'll go back to 0.9.19... Hope you guys work it out....

Forgive my ignorance....
by Murley - Jul 10th 2000 15:48:11
I am using the latest gaim. On my buddy list, I do not see a menu option to
send someone a file. Windows aim users can send me files, but I cannot send
them files. Is this possible to do? I can send a file from my windows
machine to my redhat linux gaim and It prompts me to accept the file.
However, I do not see an option under gaim to send a user a file?
Thanks for any help.

Opps
by Murley - Jun 30th 2000 12:53:42
OK, after I opend my eyes, I saw some availabel plugins here on the
freshmeat site. Cool stuff, I see that the File Transfer stuff is included,
meaning that you can receive file from other Aim peeps, but I can seem to
send files back to them? Has this been implemented?? Or will it?
Thanks!

File Transfer?
by Murley - Jun 30th 2000 12:14:02
I was looking and you mentioed that you added File Transfer ability in
version 0.9.15 is this also in 0.9.19?? I can't seem to figure how to use
that feature? I also noticed plugin ability, is there any plugins available
yet? And if so where? Thanks for you help, this is a great program.
BTW: I am on redhat linux 6.2 and I compiled 0.9.19 with no problems ;-)

by rick - Jun 7th 2000 21:02:40
Ever since you guys added plugins to Gaim, I haven't been able to compile
new versions. I haven't spent much time w/ it but i found it is a problem
w/ the plugins during compillation. Has anyone else had these problems? I'm
emailing the errors to the developers.

Viewing away messages?
by jtheobald - Apr 13th 2000 19:13:34
Hi, folks. I must first say that gAIM is an asset to the community. I was
so glad to find it when I switched over to Linux from Windows. At first I
thought I was going to be stuck using the AOL QuickBuddy web page to keep
in touch with my college people (who only use AIM, and not ICQ. argh.) .
Finding gAIM was quite a relief. My question is whether it is possible to
read a buddy's away message without first contacting them, and then getting
their < Auto-Respond >. I would think that if you are able to view the
user's info, and the fact that they have indeed raised an away message, you
would be able to read the away message. Does anyone know if there is a
reason for not having access to the away message? Is it a limitation of the
protocol? Thanks. Keep on pimpin'.

status?
by Ian Wehrman - Mar 21st 2000 01:48:37
what's the status of gaim? will someone be picking up development? this is
a really great opensource program, and it would be a real pity to see it
drift away...
either way, thanks gaim developers for your contributions.

Re: memory leak
by naChoZ - Feb 29th 2000 20:07:34
I'd love a patch myself, but I suspect the project is dead at this point
given the length of time since it was last updated. Plus I notice that Rob
Flynn is now working on the Everybuddy client. Everybuddy is still lacking
in some interface features, but the functionality is there (you can even
transfer files) and memory doesn't leak. I looked at it after running it
at home for an entire weekend (fri night |
