whois supports all protocol extensions (RIPE, 6bone, CRSNIC) with the familiar RIPE command line interface and IPv6 support. It also automagically queries the right registry for all domains and most netblocks.

The current URL states it's accessible via HTTP however this doesn't seem to be working at the moment. You can access it via FTP though:
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/w/whois/

[»] slowwwwwwww
by Apollyon - Apr 18th 2003 12:50:07

This client takes an insane amount of time to do whois
queries. I've tried 4.6.2 and 4.6.3. I'm wondering where I
find the 'normal' whois client that responds almost
immediately. Any ideas on how to fix this problem or where
to find the 'normal' whois client?

I can only see it being slow if you're trying to do a whois on a domain that has a slow whois server. This whois program queries the proper whois servers (rather than you having to know them yourself) which makes it a bit slower, but it is about a million times better than the whois program you think you want.

This prog is an absolute lifesaver. I attempted to scan *.au host records for ages before I found this in 2000; kudos to the developer.

[»] RedHat 7.1 package
by Dan Anderson - Jun 28th 2001 13:41:18

I built RedHat RPM packages for whois. Source and i386 binary packages are at: ftp://dan.drydog.com/pub/swhoisd/ or http://dan.drydog.com/swhoisd/

Also there is Swhoisd, Simple Whois Daemon.

[»] This is a little gem

Since I daily try to contact the admins responsible for systems scanning our hosts, this little whois vastly simplifies my life.
