> get the package. That's a bit odd, there are dozens of mirrors for ftp.us.kernel.org, mine is one of them and I know it's up. ftp.us.kernel.org is a round-robin DNS. -d

The site isn't/wasn't down, some clients (mostly browsers) don't follow symlinks properly.
