Linux Progress Patch - Default branch
Section: Unix

Added: Mon, Dec 25th 2000 05:22 UTC (7 years, 7 months ago) Updated: Wed, Jan 29th 2003 13:48 UTC (5 years, 5 months ago)

About:
The Linux Progress Patch is a kernel patch which displays a full-screen logo with a progress bar and some informational text while booting. It hides the normal startup messages printed by the kernel, and is meant for people that don't care about complicated and possibly confusing boot messages.

Hi, I suggest using the bootlogo patch
done by SuSE instead. The lpp stuff hasn't been
    updated for a long time.

    Cheers,
    Cajus

[»] LPP on 2.4.27
by Advantis - Oct 14th 2004 02:28:56

Is there a way to apply this patch to 2.4.27? The patch doesn't apply cleanly on it.

[»] Problem with lpp
by Waillant - Jul 22nd 2003 00:48:18

Hi, I've a problem with lpp with kernel 2.4.20 on a PC with
via C3 processor anf LCD display.
I use grub and all the linux system is internal the initrd (run
on RAM).
In the grub boot menu I use:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz rw root=/dev/ram0 console=/dev/tty2
CONSOLE=/dev/tty2
initrd=/boot/initrd.gz ramdisk_size=23167

When the system boot, the image boot screen appear for
a moment then the system hang with a black screen and
caps lock and scroll lock blinking.

I modify some constant of lpp patch because I must use
800x600 images and the theme that I download has a file
(definitions-800x600) with needed parameters.

Someone could help me?

Thank you.
Bye, Nicola

Hmm. I haven't looked at lpp for a long time. Maybe there's some bug in the image handling. You may try http://www.bootsplash.org stuff. It is by far more variable than lpp.
    Greetings...

[»] Patches for new kernels and other stuff here!
by Leon Castellanos - Nov 30th 2001 12:02:50

I have been doing some private work to use the patch for my job. I have created patches for 2.4.12 and 2.4.16 and also a script to fix the linux_logo.h from themes for old kernels. My private repository is at:

http://lwzclan.org/lpp/

Enjoy

ok you patches for 2.4.16 looks pretty cool, but i get the text that comes up when starting up printed all over my bootscreen. it starts at about half dont the screen (that means somewhat further down than it did when i had the penguin. the progress bar is though working. the text and the progress-bar kind of try to overwrite oneanother. anybody any suggestions? sincerely johannes wilm

you need to divert the text to another console you can do this by adding to your append="" in your lilo.conf, add something like append="console=/dev/tty2 CONSOLE=/dev/tty2" rerun lilo and you should be all set.

[»] later kernels?
by Stefan Ott - Jul 28th 2001 12:40:43

hello

i really enjoyed this piece of software on early 2.4 kernels. unfortunately the latest release doesn't seem to work on current kernels (tried with 2.4.7) anymore. are future releases planned, and, if so, when?

I think it's disappointing that they do not seem to be working on their project anymore. I have sucessfully built the lpp patch into kernel 2.4.6. It requires a bit of looking at the patch - and finding where it goes in the modified source code, but it is possible. I could maybe make a patch for kernel 2.4.9(And maybe later versions). I also wrote a program for my own benefit - doesn't ALWAYS work yet - that'll take a theme linux_logo.h file, and the dimensions, and produce a jpg image out of it, so then you can actually see what it looks like full screen without recompiling your kernel every time you want to check it out. Anyways, I'll see what I'll end up doing. Later.

Just for interest, I am successfully using it with 2.4.2 It's probably not optimized for it but it does work.
