can't add roms
by deadyoda - Feb 5th 2005 10:07:41
Hi,
KnoppixMame is a very good idea, but i have a BIG problem.
I tried to add roms to iso with winiso, but don't work.
I tried to burn image as multisession with alcohol120%, and add roms files
after with nero,
but can't find roms with file->audit ....
So i tried to add iso with addroms command at boot promp.
After file -> audit ... I closed and created ISO.
But when i boot i got this :
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/deadyoda/pc/xmame.JPG
I tried to boot with 1.2.1 but my computer don't want to boot with this
version. ( Asus P4P800 mobo )
I really need some help...

1.4 was too unstable and got dumped. I was waiting to
make a fresh fork from Knoppix 3.6 which is out now
so the next version of KnoppiXMAME will likely be out
before the end of the month. With the three day
weekend coming up, I will likely get a lot of progress
done. I've already got refreshes working well together
of all the latest relevant software such as xmame 0.86,
gxmame 0.35cvs, and the latest -ck kernel which now
supports reiser4. I haven't decided yet whether to name
it 1.5 or 2.0. We'll see if it is cool enough for 2.0 at
release time :)

gameport joystick not working
by Karawane - Jul 4th 2004 02:54:36
I tried several analogue (PC style) and digital (Amiga style) Joysticks and
gamepads for the gameport (through SB 4.1) and all possible permutations of
selections in the controller section, but KnoppiXmame wouldn't recognize
any of my controllers. They usually work perfectly (under Mandrake 9.1 and
W2000). Could anyone, please, tell me if I need to include any additional
driver or library in the ISO image to get joystick support? Or is there
anything else (besides ticking joystick support and configuring game
preferences) to get a joystick to work in KnoppixMame?
Anyway: KnoppixMame is a GREAT project!! :-)

What version did you try? 1.3 beta or 1.2.1? 1.3 beta
has a lot of known issues. It is being dropped
altogether and I am focusing on 1.4 now.

Did you run a game audit like addroms suggests? That
should make your game list show what you have. Also,
you need to make sure your game versions correspond
with the x-mame version or some will not work.
I would make a how-to file, but last time I started
doing it, I told myself "Screw this, just make it
automatic" and I wrote the addroms utility.
As far as updating the version of x-mame, that will be
available in the next version. For now, you would have
to do your own remaster of the CD which is not simple.
In fact remastering Knoppix at all is not really easy. It's
why I decided to write the remastering utility. The
whole thing is being re-written from scratch for the
next version of knoppixmame to be more robust with
things like updating the x-mame version and finding
your samples/snapshots/ctrlr/etc.. stuff.
As for your last question, an external usb hard drive for
roms should not be a problem with 1.2.1. I haven't
tested it, but I did make sure the kernel and scripts had
support for it.

Hi. Sorry, I have been away for a while. I've been there
w/ the 100's of CD-R's. Finally, I switched to CD-RW
for development. :)
When the boot prompt appears, type "addroms" or
"knoppix addroms". Put your roms in /roms on your
hard disk and the remastering utility should see them
and give you instructions from there. Every kind of
filesystem is supported except NTFS which will work in
the next version. Be sure to run a game audit in the
addroms utility otherwise your new CD image will not
show you the updated games list with your own roms.

1.3 beta coming..
by Daniel R. Tarsky - May 10th 2004 23:30:41
Because development is taking so long for 1.3, I thought I'd put a beta up
for you all to play with. The file size is down to 116 megs so it can
probably be booted from a usb memory stick now. Also, I've installed the
NVidia binary driver which is kicking ass with awesome Xv scaling
performance. Also, I modified the kernel to hopefully fix the via AC97
codec not having sound for a lot of people. It works on my mobo, so I want
to see how it works for others. the addroms script will take a bit longer
to create an image because i am compressing just about everything, so a
remaster has to re-create the rootsquash file. This should not be a problem
though, and it's less than halved my file size.
Arcade monitor support is not ready yet so it's not in the beta. Also, I
would like to have the ATI binary driver available as well but don't have a
card to test with. Can anyone loan or donate me one?
The beta should be available tomorrow, so keep an eye out.

Problems with Knoppixmame
by evilpenguinj - May 5th 2004 12:54:05
Hi All
I have tried everything to get Roms into Knoppixmame. First I tried using
a prgram called magiciso to insert the roms in the roms folder and resave
the iso. When I try to run it afterwords it can't find the kernal. Then I
tried to use the function of addroms. But I am running win 2000 and when it
goes searching for ntfs drivers it seems to just sit there. Can anyone give
me step by step instructions on either making it with magiciso, or how to
burn it with nero, telling me exactly which file to select as the boot
image. Please I need your help as I would love to get this all running on
one dvd.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Problems with Knoppixmame
by Daniel R. Tarsky - May 6th 2004 15:20:23
Hi Jason. NTFS access is still experimental so you may
want to try making a 2-4 gig FAT32 partition to try
using addroms with. Otherwise, if you want to try using
something like magiciso to make your own CD, be sure
to tell your software that the boot image is
isolinux\isolinux.bin. Disable any floppy or HD
emulation, and set the boot load size to 4.
I am working on better NTFS support for 1.3, which is
one of the reasons the next version is taking a bit
longer than usual. I hope this information helps you.

Daniel:
Thanks for putting Knoppixmame together. It's nicely done.
I'm having the same problem Jason mentioned. Here's what I did:
* First tried the built-in remastering script on a 5 gig fat32
partition on my HD. It made an iso image, but after burning to a CD and
rebooting with the disc all I got were init errors. Something about
runlevel not available.
* Then I tried using MagicISO to just add the roms into the rom
folder, and save a new iso file and burn to disk. This time I got a
checksum error.
Any pointers?

1.3 hitting late-alpha
by Daniel R. Tarsky - Apr 3rd 2004 23:21:53
Version 1.3 is around the corner with most of the new features people are
asking for.
Via On-board AC97 sound is now working. For some reason, the linux driver
outputs through the mic jack, and it needs special kernel options. I
patched the driver to enable them by default. Hopefully it doesn't just fix
my configuration and break others.
Many people have asked for arcade monitor support. I will be making the
example modelines from x-mame available as an "arcademon" boot
option, but as I don't have the hardware it will take some daring souls to
test.
The addroms script will be a bit more robust, finding updates to gxmame or
xmame and putting them on the new CD. I will also have it remaster a user's
custom XF86Config if they have one already for an arcade monitor. It's not
definite yet, but I may also give addroms the ability to act as a frontend
for romalizer so roms can be patched up for best compatability with the
version of xmame to be installed.
As always, the underlying Debian distro has been dist-upgraded to most
current experimental packages. The kernel is now based on wolk
(wolk.sourceforge.net) which has the benefit of all the latest -mm and -ck
stuff.
Beta will be reashed in the next couple of days, following with a release
as soon as the new features are stable.

Great Project......May I ask if there is a way to manualy add monitor and
controller settings that the addroms script could include or a short
"how to" for a manual build that those of us with much less
experiance in making linux do what you can, add monitor/controller configs
and remaster the CD?
Thanks.

Great Version

At least i have the chance to use Knoppix 1.2.1, and so far there have not
been any problems, (except for a couple of roms dependencies).. It simply
rocks!!!, i even think it's faster than MAME windows ...
This weekend i'm going to test my genius "Arcade" six button
controller, which in windows works with a driver, but slows the computer a
LOT... I will comment about it as soon as i try... Keep the good work

Anyway, i download last version and edit using winiso, but the disc keep
telling me it didn't found the kernel image, now you have an option to burn
and add roms, this roms could be in a ext3 partition ?, and if so, in which

Hi. Yes, I think the audio problem is kernel-related. So far, I only have
reports that the via ac97 codec driver isn't working. Your custom kernel
needs to be renamed from vmlinuz-blah-blah.gz to /isolinux/KnoppiXMAME,
then you can put the modules in /modules. I'll be releasing an updated
version soon to fix this.
Roms need to be on your hard drive in the /roms directory. /samples for
samples. addroms should find them there.

Arcade Monitor support.
by cmckenzi - Feb 10th 2004 11:19:20
Hi Daniel.
I've been trying to contact you for a couple of weeks to offer testing
help with potentially adding arcade monitor support. I'm not sure if I've
managed to get an e-mail through to you, or if the 3 addresses on /., SF,
and here are correct.
Either way, I've got a Matrox G400, and a standard res RGB arcade
monitor.
I'd like, with your help, to either write a tutorial on updating
KnoppiXMAME for adding arcade monitor support, or simply offer testing
services with my setup.
I've had my cabinet with Mame DOS running in it for 2 years, but 1 year
ago I tried to update it with AdvanceMAME and ended up trashing my HD. Now
I'm thinking it's time I got it up and running again, and I might as well
take advantage of my DVD burner. :-)
Please contact me if interested.

1.2 delayed a couple more days
by Daniel R. Tarsky - Feb 1st 2004 01:24:27
Sorry, but I halted the 1.2 upload to crank out a couple more internal
release candidates. If I had the bandwidth, people would see all my betas
(1.2 had about 17 betas and 20 release candidates) but when I catch a bug
or uncover missing functionality during a final upload, I'll halt the whole
thing. The *real* 1.2 is uploading now, and I promise that this release
process won't stop. I promise it will be worth the wait!
P.S. when some graphic artist sees the new boot logo, maybe they will take
pity on my lack of artist skills and make a real one? :)

Version 1.2 done
by Daniel R. Tarsky - Jan 26th 2004 21:21:38
I've finally squashed the last bug keeping 1.2 from starting the slow,
painful upload to sourceforge. Expect it this weekend or early next week
some time. New features: Updated to a GTK+ look and feel, much easier on
the eyes. New boot option: "knoppix addroms". Yep, you read that
right. I finally got around to writing a nice graphical utility for adding
roms from a hard drive to a CD/DVD image. Just plop roms and samples in
/roms and /samples on any hard drive partition (xfs, reiser, ext2/3, fat32,
even ntfs if you are daring), and they will be found by the utility to
create a new CD image with. The new CD image is written to your hard drive,
your burn it with your favourite software (no worrying about getting the
boot image right), and voila! Your own personal, portable, multiple arcade
machine system.

Wow Daniel, thats great!!!, by the way i found that there are new versions
of xmame and gxmame (0.78), it will be very good if you can add this
versions, because they manage a chd compress mode (which was very needed
with the size of chd), also there is a new mame version, 0.79 but i don't
think it will be very wise to include it (wait for a xmame/gxmame version),
mainly because it change the arquitecture and probably introduce new
bugs... By the way, a utility to add roms is really great, no more iso
editors... Thanks Daniel for your hard work, and could you please post the
versions you are going to use?

Sure. X-MAME will be version 0.78 and GXMame is 0.34b. I also included
Captive for ntfs write support in the addrom utility, but don't have an XP
system to test it with myself. I got it working on a win2k ntfs partition,
but couldn't verify the image. Anyone who doesn't want to risk messing up
an ntfs partition should make a fat32 one for the CD image and roms. Linux
kernel was updated to 2.6.1, and Debian was dist-upgraded to the most
current experimental packages some time around December 16th.
Oh yeah, I also put in some autoprobing for disk partitions which the
addroms utility uses. But it also made adding another new feature trivial:
Dynamic GXMame path configuration. So if you don't want to bother with
re-burning the CD you don't have to unless you want the roms to be
portable. The CD will find /roms and /samples folders on all disks,
automatically mounting and configuring GXMame to find them. All you have to
do is run a game audit when it starts to have the gamelist show your own
games.

hard drive installation is not really a high priority, nor the scope of
the project, although you can run the CD and play roms from a hard drive.

Daniel, this release is great, but i don't know if it's possible to post
the versions you use (mame, gxmame), as they change a lot ... (Speacially
now with new MAME version, 0.8 :) )

knoppixmame 1.1 includes X-MAME 0.77.1 and GXMame 0.33 with some
modifications to update it's use of command-line options. GXMame is often
behind xmame when they change command-line options, so things can break.
Both executables are now stored in the bin/ folder on the .ISO, so you can
always grab the newest (0.8) x-mame executable from x.mame.net and replace
the one included in knoppixmame.

1.1 is ready
by Daniel R. Tarsky - Dec 18th 2003 01:38:03
I was about 1/4 of the way through the upload when I noticed Linux 2.6 went
live. As soon as it compiles, I'll upload knoppixmame 1.1 with the new
kernel. Thankfully, an easily replacable kernel is one of my new features.

1.1 is on it's way..
by Daniel R. Tarsky - Dec 15th 2003 03:22:18
I've been up most of the night testing the new features of KnoppiXMAME 1.1,
well if you call playing Dragonball Z "testing new features."
Here is a list of new things to look for in the new version being released
this week:
2.6.0-test11 kernel. I think I'm the first Knoppix-based project running
on 2.6.
The xmame and gxmame executables have been moved onto the CD as the roms
were in 1.0. This is the way it should always have been. Now someone can
just grab the newest xmame binary from x.mame.net and put it on a fresh
CD.
Minor cosmetic changes, and faster boot times. I've removed a lot of
cruft, including XFree86 3.3. People with cards so old they still have to
run 3.3 will probablyl be happy enough running an older knoppixmame too.
Because I moved and don't have DSL anymore, uploading releases is tedious.
I will most likely have the beta stable enough for a public release this
week. As soon as I can get over somewhere to upload this beast, 1.1 will
reach the masses.
Oh yeah, currently I'm building with xmame 0.77.1 and gxmame 0.33. I'll do
a final version refresh of them before the release. Often they are out of
sync (as they are right now), so I modified gxmame to stop giving xmame
obsolete options to barf on.

Checking in..
by Daniel R. Tarsky - Jul 8th 2003 00:31:34
Well, because there are more than a couple of
people using knoppixmame now, I feel it is
pertinent to check in.. First of all, there is still not a
website for this project. The planetmirror people
were kind enough to offer me file hosting in a real
time of need so I will certainly not blame them if
other things are more interesting right now. But
seriously folks, I could really use a web page. even
a lame one :) I am in no way an html expert. In
fact, I shiver at posting most of the time because I
can't even post usable tags.
To catch you all up, 1.0 was quite a success, and I
thank everyone who has shared and enjoyed my
first endeavor in software "glueing". I say so
because >99% of knoppixmame is written by other
people. I just took things which are cool already
(e.g. Knoppix, XMAME, GNU/Linux) and made the
next logical gamer-centric step to package it all
up.
I have a couple of future goals which could use
some help though, which means feel free to apply:
I want to make bootable game CDs ala gentoo,
but I don't want to make them complain and die
when only NVidia and ATI cards aren't used. Next,
and this might be even more ambitious: I want to
unify the xmame renderers so they don't have to all
be built as separate executables. In other words, if
DGA fails, I want to have Xv tried. If both fail, or X11
isn't even available, I want to have svgalib used.
The modularity of the xmame renderers is probably
one of the many reasons it is so portable, but in the
Linux domain, they shouldn't have to be all
separate ~16MB executables!
Anyways, my update and rants are over. As
always, please send me bug fixes and feature
requests personally.

I would love for knoppixmame to work on an arcade
cabinet, but I don't have the hardware to test it with. If you
could supply me with configuration settings (XF86Config
for cards which support arcade monitors, mame-specific
options which may need to be set) I would be happy to
merge them into the autoconfiguration scripts. Send me
an email at dtarsky@charter.net

Adding roms in Linux
by dave - Jun 29th 2003 06:49:33
Would someone give some directions or point to a link on
how to add roms to the iso in Linux? Somewhere I read
something about using xcdroast but I just cannot figure out
how to do it. And a google search hasn't proven very
helpful. Thanks.

Re: Adding roms in Linux

What I did was I used WinRAR to uncompress the original ISO. I then copied
my roms over to the newly created \roms directory. Next I used Nero to
create a Bootable CD using Hard Drive emulation. I used the .img file
found in the uncompressed KNOPPIX folder as the image to use. Next I added
all the directories that were uncompressed (including the \roms directory
with my newly added files) to the project and burned it. The only problem
I have right now is I'm getting a message saying it can't find certain
files when I try to run any game. I tried uncompressing my roms in the
\roms folder but that didn't work. I think I'm going to stick with Mame32
on my Windows machine anyway.

You need to run a game audit once you've added roms
to the CD. Click on File, then Audit all Games in gxmame.
Mame32 is fine too, but this project was geared more
towards portability. You can take this CD to just about
any PC and start playing. If it's too old to be CD bootable,
just make a floppy from the CD.

Under Linux, you can use 'mkisofs' to create the iso image like so :
mkisofs -c KNOPPIX/boot.cat -b KNOPPIX/boot.img -o knoppixMAME.romedUp.iso
-R /path/knoppixMAME/directory

Xcdroast : first put te iso in the track directori and burn a
CD as multisesión , put this CD in the CDwriter. And then master a new
track,(master source tab) with the roms you have selected, add this track
with /roms path, and update session view. Then Create session/image , write
as multisesion. Sorry for my english

Zipped ROMs?
by bsterix - Jun 27th 2003 07:28:34
Hi,
with Mame under Windows i can use zipped ROMs. Wenn i copy those *.zip
Files into the /roms/ path on my CD and try to use them with KnoppixMame
none of them works. Are "zipped" ROMS supported by KnoppixMame?
How should i put my ROMS into KnoppixMame?

Zipped roms work fine. In fact, they are preferred.
Once you have booted KnoppiXMAME from the
CD with your own roms, open the 'File' menu in
gxmame and select 'Audit All Roms'. Once the
audit is done, the menu should change to reflect
what you've added.

Video Problems?
by nfn_nln - Jun 25th 2003 13:27:50
Under Windows Mame (0.70) using a Diamond Viper V770 all of my ROMS work
fine.
With the same machine under KnoppixMame (0.69?) the only ROM I could get
to work was "Discs of Tron (Upright)". All the others came back
w/:
<snippet>
Using a visual with a depth of 16bpp
Using private color map MIT-SHM &xv extensions available trying to
use...
can't find a suitable RGB format trying YUY2 instead
....
Either all ports are in use, or the video card doesn't provide a suitable
format.
Bye
Unable to start emulation
</snippet>
Specific ROMS include:
"Bump'n'Jump" (bnj.zip valid for mame from .36final to .70)
"Bubble Bobble" (bublbobl.zip valid for mame from .37b4 to
.70)
"Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo" (spf2t.zip valid for mame from
.60 to .70)
etc...
I can't find any information about this on Xmame.

I'm sorry that this isn't in a FAQ somewhere about
XMAME/KnoppiXMAME. My users seemed to go
from a few thousand to over twenty-thousand in
one week so I suppose some documentation is in
order. It's pretty problem-free,
but this is a common issue for me too.
The problem is that the two most popular (fastest
and prettiest) renderers for xmame are Xv and
DGA. The problem lies in the fact that some cards
work best with one or the other, and there are
currently no software fall-backs if one fails to try the
other. (may be a nice feature to add later :)
I suspect that your card may work with both since it
was able to boot a rom (discs of tron, one of my
all-time favs) so you could try playing with the
heightscale and widthscale options to see if that
helps. Otherwise try entering 'knoppix dga' at the
boot prompt and it will use DGA instead. So far I
haven't had a report that *neither* renderer works,
so I hope this helps!
Please email me a bug report if the above doesn't
help you. I will be posting some documentation
soon on how to customize your own knoppixmame
CD. Adding roms is trivial, but adding your personal
configuration to the CD can be a little tricky for
someone not familiar with Linux.

Screw the RC, 1.0 is final
by Daniel R. Tarsky - Jun 18th 2003 16:41:25
I had numerous problems trying to upload a release
candidate, and it turned out my cable connection was
slowly dying. While waiting a week for a tech to come fix
it, I finished all the new features for the stable 1.0, and the
file should be available as soon as the ibiblio maintainers
move the file to the public folder. Not only are all the
features I listed before stable, I also added various boot
command-line options: noalsa to use the original OSS
hardware autodetection, ip= and nm= to set a static
address for network gaming, and dga to configure
gxmame automatically to use DGA instead of Xv. The
last feature I added was the probe for a home directory
on the CD so a user can reconfigure gxmame/sawfish to
their liking and then copy /ramdisk/home to /home on the
CD so their changes will take effect by re-burning the ISO
without having to remaster Knoppix.

1.0 Release Candidate ready
by Daniel R. Tarsky - Jun 9th 2003 21:17:44
I've uploaded the 1.0 release candidate to ibiblio, and
barring a lot of negative feedback causing more bugfixes,
this will probably be 1.0. There has been somewhat of an
unwritten stigma attached to mame related software
never hitting 1.0. Well with the quality of xmame being at
least past 2.0 IMHO, it's time for KnoppiXMAME 1.0. The
iso should be on ibiblio and mirrors in a day or two.
New features to expect (for my dozens of subscribers):
ALSA sound by default, network gaming support, rom
folders are on the bare ISO instead of in the compressed
filesystem so you can add roms with any iso editor, and
all this at an even smaller size: 230MB. (i removed all
man pages, who needs 'em! :)

Hello,
Just wondering how to add roms on a Linux only box.
I can mount the iso with the mount -o loop knoppix.iso /mnt/isoimage
command. Then what do I do?
I want to copy roms/samples over and then burn with cdrecord. I'm looking
forward to playing Donkey Kong on the work computer. :-)
Thanks for the help.

Ok, got it working and thought I'd document my experience.
Mount the iso image:
mount -o loop Knoppix.iso /mnt/isoimage
Copy the image:
mkdir ~/Knoppix
cp -rf /mnt/isoimage ~/Knoppix/
Add roms/samples:
cp -rf /mnt/cdrom/roms/ ~/Knoppix/roms/
Make the new iso image:
mkisofs -c KNOPPIX/boot.cat -b KNOPPIX/boot.img -o
KnoppixMAME.plus.roms.iso -R ~/Knoppix/
Burn with cdrecord!
