Screenshot About:
INSERT (the Inside Security Rescue Toolkit) aims to be a multi-functional, multi-purpose disaster recovery and network analysis system. It boots from a credit card-sized CD-ROM and is basically a stripped-down version of Knoppix. It features good hardware detection, fluxbox, emelfm, links-hacked, ssh, tcpdump, nmap, chntpwd, and much more. It provides full read-write support for NTFS partitions (using ntfs-3g), and the ClamAV virus scanner (including a fairly recent signature database and a GUI). It provides partition handling with gParted and also has a network boot facility.

[»] missing sata-sis support
by 装上呆头玉米鹅 - Apr 26th 2007 20:57:18

With SIS chipset, INSERT cannot found the hard disk on the sata interface while pata is ok. I think this can be solved by installing module "sata_sis" but there is no this module.

ps. Where can I find the config&patch of kernel building? I'd like build a new INSERT kernel if possible.

    [»] Re: missing sata-sis support
    by Matthias Mikuletz - Aug 31st 2007 02:47:41

sata-sis is statically compiled into the kernel. To do a custom kernel build is not easy, and instructions and files are hard to keep up to date for download. (Sorry, no time for that. Maybe a a later time.) Regards Matthias

[»] 64Mb usb key, not enough space
by Gilles Hamel - Apr 17th 2007 13:27:43

The 1.3.9b doesn't fit on a regular 64Mb usb key.
I had to modify usb-install.sh by adding the option '-N 256' to the mke2fs command. The mke2fs default calculation of the number of inode gives too many reserved blocks and waste some precious kbytes ...

[»] ubcd 4 integration
by rindi - Mar 28th 2007 02:27:47

There is a new UBCD release, 4.01 and as far as I can see there isn't any "full" version of that CD anymore that would include Insert. I'd like to integrate insert into the UBCD but am not sure how to do that. Can anyone give me some tips on how I should do that? I've seen that on the 3.4 version of the UBCD insert is one file without an extension.

[»] USB key boot
by Sunny - Feb 12th 2007 13:32:43

Hi, I tried with the latest version ( 1.3.8a) to create a bootable USB key. The key was created OK, but I have problems booting.
It opens the grub prompt, it loads the initrd, etc. but after the USB device scan it reports:
"Can't find Insert filesystem, sorry".
I tried at least on 5 different machines, and it is always the same.
How do I fix this?

I don't know how to get the antivirus in INSERT to work. It seems the explorer included does not see my HDD. I have read instructions but still don't know what to do to make it see my drives.

Please give detailed instructions for I am not very familiar with this technology.

Thank you.

    by Matthias Mikuletz - Aug 31st 2007 02:58:39

Ii should think, if you want to use a linux system to operate on your harddisk, you should first make yourself familiar with using such a system (i.e. know how to mount harddisk partitions etc.). Also you should start reading the (small bit of) documentation that comes with INSERT. You can see it in the browser after system startup. INSERT is designed for use by experienced (linux) users. INSERT tries to provide the tools - you need to provide the knowledge. Sorry Matthias

[»] trouble with insert homedir
by h.lekin - Dec 5th 2006 03:35:58

I installed 1.3.8a on the 2nd partion of a flash drive using grub as boot manager. Insert homedir does not work as expected:

Installing on a FAT partition creates insert.img. Loading it gives two error messages: (1) insert.img is probably an old version of 'INSERT persistent home'. You should create a new one soon. (2) Cannot create union system from old insert.img home only format, sorry.

Installing on a fresh ext2 partition copies /home 1:1; no insert.sh is created(?!). This persistent home can't be accessed at all, neither myconf=/dev/sdb1 nor home=scan works.

Is this due to limited understanding or is it a system fault?

INSERT is a very good rescue live-system; lots of thanks.

Regards, H.L.

Well, actually we do have an entry for INSERT in our PXE boot menu over here. That's no problem.

If anyone that asked for the details on how to do this has that information would you be willing to post it here? I'm curious if/how it differs from what I did.

I mimicked Matthias Mikuletz's work on pxe booting DSL http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/talk/node/248

which amounted to my adding a few lines to linuxrc in INSERT's miniroot.gz and repackaging miniroot with the INSERT cloop image in the directory miniroot/cdrom/INSERT/. I've not done much testing, and although there are a few problems

          1) at startup "cannot stat cdrom/isolinux/vmlinuz"

          2) from a superuser's console, "reboot" generates an error "segmentation fault"

for the most part INSERT seems to be working.

What would you like to scan if not files?
You mean the MBR and boot sectors?
Looks like that cannot be cleaned with clamav:(
But for example you can always write a new mbr with 'install-mbr' or with grub.

[»] system lockup with toram boot parameter
by Gilles Hamel - Sep 26th 2005 13:52:36

During a backup recovery, i realize there is a kernel issue.

If you read a big file greater than physical memory, the system consumes all buffer cache, then begins to use swap. I don't know why, but the system freeze immediatly after using swap file.

You can easily reproduce the problem with $ cat Hugefile >/dev/null

Combined with noswap parameter, the problem vanish.
Without toram parameter, all works fine.

Anyone has noticed this issue ?

[»] Boot from USB
by Jack - Aug 4th 2005 00:10:38

sooooooooooooooooo frustrating! i never could get insert installed on USB to boot. ugh!!

luckily i found a site that lets you buy the drive over the internet, which isn't very expensive. just got it (512 mb version) and it works awesome. i already put lots of mp3s on it and still have space left over. it boots most computers i tried, and works with windows files too.

the site is http://linuxusb.nfshost.com/

the only thing is i can't figure out how to write to the usb pen drive while booted in insert. maybe it isn't possible? has anyone else bought a usb thumb drive from that site and figured out how to write to the drive while booted in linux? i think maybe it mounts it read-only to boot, so it isn't possible. :( that is my only complaint, otherwise i love this thing and take it everywhere! (if i create a file in insert, then i just email it to myself since i can't write to usb)

You can write to the stick but you cannot (easily) write to the INSERT filesystem (modifying it). You have to mount the stick read-write like with: 'mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/usbdisk -o rw -t yourfs'. Regards Matthias

[»] troubles with usb-install
by Mikko - Jun 4th 2005 16:49:18

I'm having problems trying to install Insert to a USB with usb-install. It stopped in Grub installation so I've tried that manually: grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/usbinstall /dev/uba . First it gave the "/dev/uba1 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive." message, then I fixed the device.map file somewhat according to www. Now it gives "The file /mnt/usbinstall/boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly."

My device.map has this line now:
(hd0) /dev/uba1

Where is the correct forum to post bug reports etc?

Thanks,
Mikko

Just finished downloading 1.3.5a_en. Insert saved my butt again. I had deleted the mbr on my second drive by accident. Booted Insert, ran one of the utilities, rebuild mbr and partition table. ALL DATA WAS there again. In fact it was better than before. This was a 160gb hard drive. With over 100gb of data that was needed. A windows partition and 3 linux partitions, 2 reiserfs and swap area. But Insert solved that problem again. Insert keeps saving my butt... jdebay

This project is really coming along well. Lookingforward to seeing the Kernel 2.6 version soon.
A couple of questions, both to do with upgrading applications: Is there any easy way to upgrade ClamAv so it doesn't keep telling me that it is out of date. Also with ClamAv Gui I tried scanning one of my hard drives, but it gave many input&output errors.
The other application I would like to upgrade is Firefox, or on restart install version 1.04 instead of 0.8 - how can I do this?
Many thanks for making these tools availble

[»] Nice Job!
by cbagger01 - Apr 6th 2005 20:36:49

Thank you for developing this extremely useful tool.

It is very useful for maintenance work, testing, image transfers, virus scanning etc.

Your latest additions are very helpful.

The calculator application is needed when determining blocksize calculations for fdisk utilities.

The pv viewer is needed for progress updates when doing large file transfers like partition backups via "dd" program.

Also, the INSERT included in the Ultimate Boot CD is a nicely tweaked version of the base iso that is very easy to use for GUI users. The only bad thing is that the UBCD INSERT version is a little bit out of date and SATA support is not as good as in the linux kernel version that is part of the most recent release of INSERT.

If you could convince the UBCD guy to update his tweaked INSERT, this would be the perfect solution.
