[»] General Availability release of Funambol v3.0
by Jason Finkelstein - Sep 27th 2006 23:18:47

The Funambol Team is very pleased to announce the General Availability release of Funambol v3.0.

You can download the v3.0 GA bundle and individual components here:
http://www.funambol.com/opensource/downloads.html

...and see what's changed (from Sync4j v2.3 to Funambol v3.0) here:
http://www.funambol.com/opensource/whatsnew3v0stable.html

This GA release for Funambol v3.0 marks a significant milestone for Funambol and for the Funambol open source community. Community members have made considerable contributions to this GA release and it shows in the high quality of the software.

With the help of the community, Funambol is also striving to increase the reach of software so that it is interoperable with as many applications and services as possible (in response to community demand, the MS Exchange and Lotus Domino Connectors were re-released and are now available).

Since the preview release of v3.0 earlier this year, the number of Funambol downloads has doubled to over 600,000. Funambol is putting mobile open source on the map and challenging proprietary mobile email vendors.

Thanks to everyone for your ongoing support.

Enjoy the software!

[»] Funambol Community Code Sniper Program launch
by Jason Finkelstein - Sep 5th 2006 07:36:31

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Funambol Community Code Sniper Program.

The main goal of the program is to broaden interoperability of the Funambol mobile application server to connect with as many useful, widely-requested applications and services as possible (based on feedback from community members). This feedback was generated primarily from a series of surveys that were presented to the community over the past few months.

Also based on this feedback, Funambol is responding by refocusing its efforts to better address community demands (e.g. the MS Exchange and Lotus Domino Connectors were the most widely requested Connectors in the survey and, therefore, will be made available with the GA release of Funambol v3.0 in the coming weeks).

Another goal of the Code Sniper Program is to make sure contributors to these community-requested projects are widely recognized and well rewarded (with bounties of up to $2000). The Funambol Community is full of talented developers and these people should have a chance to shine.

Code Sniper Highlights:
Participating community members will follow a 5-stage process which includes: 1-selecting a project, 2-submitting a general one-page proposal, 3-submitting a more detailed product specification, 4-delivering the code, 5-submitting to community testing. See here for all program details:

http://www.funambol.com/opensource/codesniperprogram.html

This is an exciting time for the Funambol Open Source Community. I'm sure everyone is eager to see what the community can produce for this program. Let the Code Sniping begin!

[»] The Honest Public License
by Jason Finkelstein - Aug 15th 2006 16:15:46

Just wanted to let everyone know that Funambol's CEO, Fabrizio Capobianco, has a posting on his blog that you all should read (posted Monday morning, August 14, Pacific Daylight Time).

In it, he discusses a proposed modification of GPL v2 to address the "ASP loophole", effectively creating the first draft of the Honest Public License (HPL). Funambol will leave this draft open for community comments and feedback for the next 30 days.

As members of the Funambol Open Source Community, you all can have a voice to influence this change. We want to hear from you and hope you will take some time to give your feedback on this important issue.

Here's a link to the blog posting:
http://www.funambol.com/blog/capo/2006/08/honest-public-license.html

[»] Funambol v3.0 beta 5 is out
by Jason Finkelstein - Jul 11th 2006 07:28:33

The Funambol Project Team is pleased to announce that v3.0 beta 5 has been released.

You can download beta 5 here:
http://www.funambol.com/opensource/downloads.html

...and see what's new in beta 5 here:
http://www.funambol.com/opensource/whatsnew3v0beta5.html

One of the first things you'll notice when you go to download is that the download page has been redesigned. This new page is a significant improvement over the old one for the following reasons:
+ better organized with better navigation and more intuitive page design
+ functionality of server bundles is now highlighted and easier to find
+ back revs of all components are easier to find
+ easier to associate components with each release (and, therefore, to understand compatibilities)

We hope you like and benefit from the new design and welcome your feedback (feel free to send any comments directly to me).

Something else that I think is important to mention regarding the v3.0 beta 5 release - there were a record number of bugs fixed in this release. So, not only is quality continuing to improve, but it's improving at an impressive pace.

I have no doubt this was made possible by the community's active participation in the Bag-a-Bug Program. The BaB Program is ongoing and you should check out the current leaders / contributors at your convenience - http://www.funambol.com/opensource/bag-a-bugprogram.html

Every day brings us closer to the v3.0 stable release. Enjoy beta 5!

Best regards,

[»] new Funambol developers mailing list
by Jason Finkelstein - Jun 21st 2006 09:01:29

In response to several requests from community members, Funambol has decided to create a mailing list dedicated to developers only. We are hoping this new list will help sustain the healthy growth of the community.

This new mailing list is for community members who are developing platform extensions and/or applications based on the Funambol code base. It is meant for discussion of issues with technical depth from architecture to development to testing. This list should NOT be used to address installation problems, configuration issues, or user questions.

By splitting the lists, we hope to focus discussions so that community members will get the answers they need more quickly. At the same time, we hope that veteran community members will continue to monitor the user mailing lists to lend help with basic issues when needed.

The new list name is funambol-developers@lists.sourceforge.net and you can subscribe here:

https://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=163933

Thanks for your continued support. If you have any comments, feel free to email me directly.

Best regards,

[»] Community Input on Funambol v3.5
by Jason Finkelstein - May 3rd 2006 07:27:48

Funambol is eager to get the entire community more involved in influencing the direction of the open source project. We are in the planning stages of v3.5 of the software and want start collecting input on what components, functionality and attributes are most important to the community for integration into the next major release.

As a community member, your feedback is critical! Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey. It is anonymous and is comprised of 1 major question. It does not go into too much detail and this is by design. We are hoping to gather general feedback and then focus in on specifics after we have assessed these general community preferences.

http://www.funambol.com/opensource/survey-3v5features.html

We will compile the results, report back to the community and take next steps from there.

Thanks in advance for your help.

[»] Funambol Community Hero Program
by Jason Finkelstein - Apr 4th 2006 13:08:25

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Funambol Community Hero Program. Much like the Bag-a-Bug Program launched last month (you can see updated status here):

http://www.funambol.com/opensource/bag-a-bugprogram.html

...the primary goals of the Hero Program aim to benefit and make life easier for the entire community. We hope to encourage sharing of experience and acquired knowledge and to promote dialogue among community members. Striving for these goals will only help to sustain and strengthen the great community that has grown around the Funambol Project.

Hero Program Highlights:
Earn Hero Points for answering questions introduced by community members on the mailing lists (SourceForge or Yahoo!). Funambol Community Heroes with enough points will be posted in the open source area of the Funambol site. The top Hero Point earner for each three-month period will win an iPod Nano. Another iPod Nano will be given away in a lottery drawing at the end of the same period - you can earn lottery entries with the Hero Points you accumulate. Go here for details:

We are very pleased to announce that following the Funambol v3.0 code release, we tallied 27,553 downloads of the software in one day! That's more downloads in one day than Funambol has ever had over one whole month!

We want to thank you for your continued support. The project would not be where it is today without your ongoing contributions of bug reports, feature requests and code submissions.

We are eager to move Funambol v3.0 beta 1 to the next level as quickly as possible and we are certain we can do this with your help.

Again, we send our deepest thanks from the entire Funambol project team.

Hi ya'll,

before you get to excited about this 1.0 release... let me tell you
that this is an early early
release. Somebody told me to release early and often - at least I
made this guy happy.
The feature list is pretty short:

* One-Way-Sync (LDAP -> client device)
* SyncSource supports VCARD (v. 2.1) format
* SyncSource supports SIFC format
* Configuration for OpenLDAP in SyncAdmin
* Authentication from sync4j framework is used
* Basic Logging

If you like, try it out and let me know what you think.

[»] Sync4j 2.3 alpha 1 is out!
by capo - Jun 10th 2005 22:01:58

You had to wait a bit, but we have now released the first version of Sync4j 2.3. It is a minor release, but with all the new stuff in it, it should probably have been a major one.

Here is the list of the key new features:
- A full implementation of OMA DM (a.k.a. SyncML DM)
- An email gateway, supporting POP, IMAP and SMTP
- An open source connector to SQL Databases
- A connector to SugarCRM (a great open source CRM system)
- A Palm client
- An iPod client (which is really cool)

BTW, both the 2.3 Sync4j DS and DM have been certified at the latest OMA TestFest and are fully SyncML compliant.

As always, stay tuned!

[»] Sync4j 2.2 beta 4 - Candidate Release 2 is out!
by capo - Mar 1st 2005 11:26:50

The Sync4j team is very pleased to announce the release of Sync4j 2.2 beta 4 - Candidate Release 2.

The release include only bug fixes, listed at the following URL: http://sync4j.funambol.com/main.jsp?main=bugsfixed_2.2.

The amount of new bugs appearing on the 2.2 release is now very minimal. If there are not surprises, this release is going to become the 2.2 stable release, once the first beta of 2.3 will be out (likely, by the end of March).
