very good solution
by Pinocchio - Nov 23rd 2007 02:06:43
i was looking for a new Security Solution which has integrated an IDS,
Proxies, Content Filtering an Anti-Spam mechanism. I checked and tested a
lot of UTM Solutions but i was absolutely surprised that this product
(which has quiete a lot of more functionality than i was looking for..) has
integrated the globale Players from the market (Surf Control, Utimaco,
Snort, ..)for a very cheap price in an easy to manage Product.
I hope they will go ahead this way in the future..

Astaro is excellent
by zenman - Feb 20th 2005 20:32:13
There is a lot of misconception in regards to security due to security
vendors and their marketing.
The truth is, there is no magic pill in regards to securing your network.
You don't just install Product X into your rack cabinet and your network is
"secured". Behind all the marketing of security companies, real
security comes from the sysadmin who has to enforce the security policy.
As someone who does IT security for a living, what Astaro has done is put
together a comprehensive security toolset buit from OSS that is EASY to
admin and enforce the policy. There is no wonder they were awarded PC
Magazine's Best Product of the Year for Business Security Solution. I've
recommended the product to my colleagues in IT security and they all love
Astaro.
If anything, Astaro should be considered a Linux/OSS success story, and I
would recommend it to anyone.

The new V5 beta (4.720) is very hot....
by ronzle - Feb 25th 2004 15:14:18
Hey guys...
the beta of V5 (4.720) is very cool.
Congradulations to the developer and the other guys who make it possible
to take out such a product ;-).
To all critics (like jeff2000uka ) let me say....
"Install it, use it and understand it". If you reached this
three points, you can adjudicate if it bad that Astaro started wit Version
1.7 !
I look forward for the stable V5.
regards
ronnerich

PPTP Sessions with Astaro
by eia568b - Feb 4th 2003 08:52:03
I know nothing about Astaro and are looking for a product to replace a MS
PPTP server.
Will Astaro support split tunnelling with PPTP?
That is, Microsoft clients connecting to a MS VPN server can surf the net
locally while directing tunnel traffic thru the VPN if they do not check
'Use default gateway on remote network'. Unfortunately, MS VPN server does
some non-standard routing to make this happen. If you do not check the 'use
g/w on remote, all traffic goes through the PPTP tunnel. Will Astaro permit
split tunnelling using MS PPTP clients?
Does Astaro have any capabilities for PPTP clients to authenticate against
a Radius server ?

Great new Version
by uladiges - Dec 27th 2002 02:00:23
The new beta version is super, the new Spam filter works great for me. The
functionality is superior to Sonicwall, Watchguard, Checkpoint and
Netscreen. Well done, Astaro team

What a bad thing!
by jeff2000uka - Jun 25th 2002 05:09:19
They started with version 1.7, hahaha (normaly I think it should be version
1)
Why: It's only marketing.
Every 2 weeks comes a new version (Isn't the old one stable!)
In six month it could be version 28.3
The Linux is terrible: because it isn't standard!
So, the most Linux users have problems with it.

You obviously have no knowledge, understanding and experience with software
development, product evolution and release management. And it would appear
that you have less knowledge of firewalls based on Linux, whose primary
function is to provide security and not open source for quacks wanting to
tinker toy around with software!!
You've got it all wrong and that's really a bad thing!

I dont think your right. Astaro isnt very bad and a good thing for home
use. But it is strange to start with 1.7 and to correct failures so often
with new versions. Since 28-Dec-2001 to 04-Jun-2002 they have 9 versions.
Im programmer and thats not a good way. I think jeff2000uka comment wasnt
fine, like yours.

For which competitor do you work, what product are you using. Did Astaro
force you, to use their product?

if you wouldn't be as ignorant as the other dumb user you would've noticed
that the updates are small ones, the reason they come that often is that
astaro has realized people want bugs fixed directly instead of waiting for
them. astaro also updates automatically. measuring a product's reliability
by their updates is amazingly stupid.
if you got no real criticism to enlighten us with I suggest you keep them
to yourself.

works good for me
by ThePythonicCow - Feb 26th 2002 03:51:11
I've been using Astaro for the last couple of
months. It's delightfully easy to administer,
and a pleasure to use. For example, every
couple of weeks, some new web-based game
I want to run will want to connect some new
port to some new server. It's a piece of cake
to look at the logs, dynamically updated, as I
recreate the failing connection, then add a rule
that defines that new server, that new service
(port), and enable a connection.

System requirements
by Patrik - Aug 30th 2001 08:13:02
Nice with a small download, but why must one use at least a Pentium II 300
with 64 Mb? That's not the kind of computer I can spare for a firewall,
especially when I can run Freesco on a 386 with 6 megabyte memory.
Explanation?

Easy to install
by li-ha - Nov 22nd 2000 12:22:43
Very small (47 mb with .gz) and very easy to install!
After only some inital setup via console there is a nice intuitive
Web-Interface with https.
The same is for testing at:

I installed tje product in late December or early
January. Truly a top notch product. Very
complete, professional and the product seems well
supported based on their forums. The only thing
that threw me off was the price for commercial use
based on the number of hosts and etc that I needed
to protect.
Cheers!

Yes: 30 days, everything enabled, no limitations
After that period, you can request a free home use license at
https://my.astaro.com - also everything enabled, but restricted for 10
users.
