Section: Unix

Added: Wed, Apr 18th 2001 12:28 UTC (7 years, 3 months ago) Updated: Thu, Dec 2nd 2004 11:53 UTC (3 years, 7 months ago)

Screenshot About:
Andromeda turns collections of MP3s into fully-featured streaming Web sites. Many other file formats are supported, including: WMA, OGG, MPG, AVI, and WMV. It can be used as a personal jukebox on a local network or over the Internet (bandwidth permitting). It works well with PHP-Nuke, PostNuke, and phpWebSite. Additional features include skins, custom playlists, logons/accounts, and a search tool. Andromeda is also multilingual, speaking English, German, Russian, Dutch, Spanish, and many other languages. No database is required. ASP and PHP versions are available.

[»] Andromeda makes it easy
by Xirtam - Sep 3rd 2003 22:30:35

Yep, lov' it.
I played around with the idea to make it more usefull to my needs and made some possible (with help of the cgi-guru Paul from www.hot-cgi-scripts.com)
It isn't finished yet but have a look on http://www.ummagumma.nl/music
I know, it uses iFrames, but that is because had to be used on www.wittebal.nl

An administration-page would be the next thing so I can add audio-files, comments and pics to it on the fly.

Great work Scott!

[»] Quick, Easy and Powerfull
by Nick Fisher - Apr 29th 2002 13:24:29

Andromeda is the top of it's class. For simple web Mp3 utilities it's the best (IMHO). Andromeda is very easy to setup and doesn't require a database (Very Cool). It requires an ordered Mp3 collection to function well but you should have that anyhow ;)
Andromeda is very well developed and polished with an astonishing amount of features for an application made from a single ASP (or PHP) file. Well worth a look if nothing else.

The main downsides are:
1) License
The developer is adament about keeping the license as is. Eventhough you download the source (It's writen in ASP or PHP) you arn't allowed to alter it. I've argued with him but at the end of the day it's his call.

2) No Database
A pro as well as a con. When you have alot of folders Andromeda can slow down a good bit as everything is done on the fly.

I love and use Adromeda, but I also would not mind hacking on it to make it better. Wouldn't it be better under a freely distributable license?

Easy to set up!

Follow instructions at Scott Matthews's site , e.g. 1 or 2 entries in the andromeda.php script, make a short andomedaPrefs.php file, put the script(s) in your mp3 directory.

Get your webserver set-up for PHP, Either change the DocumentRoot to andromeda.php or link to it from your web page..

Once you call it up from your browser, it roars through your mp3 directory and makes searchable listing of all your mp3's! No need for intregating a separate database program to keep track of things. Updating the listing? No problem. just add mp3's in the path, it self-updates each time you call it !

You must have PHP installed (v4) and have it integrated into it. I use RH 7.1, Apache. standard install - piece of cake!

Typically, there is no need to modify the core script file itself. By keeping all customization to the prefs file you'll retain your settings if you upgrade the script.

For the record, Andromeda was designed to be PHP3 compatible as well.

After struggling to provide basic streaming music services for a group of demanding friends and co-workers, Andromeda ended up saving me a variety of things including time, face, frustration, and pride. Weeks and weeks of ices and icecast issues were quickly remedied by about 30 minutes of pure andromeda love. You know want to...take the plunge.

I just visited the andromeda site with the intent of checking it out, but apparently you can no longer download a fully functional trial of the program, the free download only lets you see every other song in your collection. I didn't realize that freshmeat listed software with that type of license. Hm.

Freshmeat certainly lets developers list software licensed as Andromeda is. If you're curious, take a look at the types of licenses you can chooose from.

The Andromeda demo is indeed fully functional, except that (as you noted) every other file is displayed.

Displaying every other file is not "fully functional". Thats like saying a car with 3 wheel is fully functional. Hey, it rolls doesnt it. :(

It disappoints me to see someone "only selling" a PHP script. It is nice to acknowledge good work with money, but requiring it turns off a lot of the kind of people who would otherwise use PHP. In other words... it would surprise me greatly if you had many people buy this.

Don't be Microsoft....don't kill the spirit of freeware.

With all due respect, I tried a "donationware" appraoch for almost two years, and the unfortunate fact is that the vast majority of people don't donate. I work on Andromeda full-time, and that includes a lot of the less-fun stuff like writing docs, answering every tech support email, and so on.

The evaluation version of Andromeda is indeed fully functional -- everything works exactly as it does in the full version, except that only half of your music is displayed.

If the free version worked exacly the same as the pay version, that just winds up back in "donationware" territory. Does that really seem so unfair?

Boo hoo. Then take your product off the market. I just wasted a half-hour of my life downloading and installing your code, configuring Apache, and trying to get andromeda.php to ignore files starting with "_". Granted, with a little investigation I could have determined that Andromeda's "product" was a single crippled, unmodifiable PHP script. Now I wish I had known that before I bothered downloading it.

To use the phrase "fully functional" for a "product" whose only feature is crippled in the most perplexing way imaginable (although I suppose you could have just programmed it to ignore random files, that would have been slightly more confusing) is dishonest. Every other file?? Really? I have been a software developer for over 10 years, and I would have never even considered confusing users of a demo product in that fashion. If I had discovered this handicap on my own, I would have assumed it was a bug!

Look at it this way: I was about to send you an email asking how I could modify Andromeda.php to ignore files that start with "_", along with a $10 Paypal donation. Instead, I'm whining on Freshmeat.

It's only $35 dollars for a Personal Edition license. Isn't it worth $35 considering all the time you save not having to write it yourself? I used the demo version and ultimately decided I didn't need it. But that doesn't mean it isn't a quality script. Go ask your mommy for $35, pay the man for his hard work and stop whining.

Perhaps if you spent a little less time whining, and a little more reading the docs (or simply asking your question via email) you would already know that one of Andromeda's built-in preferences is 'skipPrefix' which you could have simply set to "_".

Fully functional is a perfectly fine way to describe it. You can play your music, see, browse, search, do whatever you want. Hiding half the music simply prevents you from using the demo as opposed to the real thing.

What's so confusing about it? It is clearly indicated on the demo download page.

Nobody provides a "Fully Functional" copy of something that isn't handicapped in some form. Most software is restricted to 30-days of use, or has nag screens, etc. Limiting it to view only half of the music is pretty much the only option he has in PHP/ASP. Clearly your "10 years" of "Software Development" "experience" didn't include any form of marketed software.

Though, someone savvy enough (and you say you are a software developer?) could hack the evaluation to work properly, is it really worth it for saving only $35?

Boo hoo, then get your whining out of freshmeat. People use this software, and people pay for it. If you don't want to then oh well.

To me 35$ is not too much to ask if it included the source and were customizable. $35 for a product that simple reads the file structure and spawns off winamp is a bit steep. I appreciate the hard work Scott put into it and it simply rocks.. but not to the tune of $35 open it up for customization and I'd pay $35

Hey buddaman, fwiw, you can customize Andromeda via an external prefs file. The reason for this appraoch is that I can provide much better support, and when you upgrade, you can keep your settings without having to recode each time.

I should also note that many of Andromeda's features came as suggestions from users -- and if they simply changed their own copy, then nobody else would benefit.

Obviously FM is a free-oriented place, but I've followed a somewhat different route. If $35 is prohibitive, feel free to contact me directly.

                  -Scott
