Abiword keeps on crashing
by Just Looking - May 11th 2005 02:58:11
Whenever I try to run Abiword on Windows XP at work, it shows a
consolewindow with some silly GTK output and errors and it crashes without
even showing the splashscreen. Anyone got an idea on how to fix this?

RFEs and Bugreports
by dcberg - Jan 4th 2005 14:10:02
Since AbiSource is down, where would I file bug reports and esp. RFEs?
Or will it be up soon again?

Should be up....

Make sure to search (query) the database before filing new bugs,
especially RFE's.

Your program
by Vanessa J. Jelmyer - Jul 3rd 2004 03:52:18
I couldn't seem to send this letter to anyone, because every e-mail adress
for ambiword has been deleted...and I figured it was such a waste of me
typing it, so I found this. Here's the letter...
Dear abisource director,
i loaded this horrible program callled abiword, (so i could tell
{by how many pages} that it would be seperated). I made a rather large
document of research, and your program would not let me open it...
At first it said the file path was wrong,so I re-entered the
correct path. It let me open the file at that time.
The next time i attemted to bring up the file, it didn't allow
me to. I tried opening it w/ another program, but would only come up w/
every type of java script you can imagine; spacing, pushing enter, java for
dashes, bold, italic, and font changes, where pictures had been entered
intodocument, any sort of site source, extra 100s of pages of random
letters and symbols, and any other complete random type of java script
there is. There was no way to re-boot, and take out the parts from
before.
I took all of the coding, and put it in an HTML editor, on an
online weblog entry, that allows you to turn java coding into HTML.
I ended up still w/ random symbols, and letters, and screwed up
spacing, that I had to spend hours deleting. I lost all the images, and had
to find all of them online again, and re-make the other ones that your
program could not seem to open.
I guess i got all of my research back (except for pictures that
i had to remake and find again), so no harm...except HOURS AND HOURS OF
WASTED TIME.
In conclusion... GO FUCK YOURSELF

-- ahh, the simple life...

Re: Your program
by dcberg - Jan 4th 2005 14:06:52
Whatever... I don't really see, what it is you're blaming AbiWord for. Not
being able to open some document? Was it an AbiWord document afterall? Have
you found a reproducable bug? I mean that's how OpenSource works: Don't go
out complaining, but tell people, how to improve their software. Nobody
will keep you from purchasing a $ 400 office suite, right?
About not being able to write emails: It's pretty obvious, the AbiSource
server is down right now, so I'd assume that there is a reason for
this. (ding, ding, ding)
Enjoy!

seems much nicer than kword
by Ben Crowell - Jun 22nd 2004 09:11:39
I've just been testing AbiWord 2.0.1 today, and it seems really nice. I had
been using Kword 1.2.1, which crashed constantly and produced bad PDF
ouput; AbiWord seems much nicer. AbiWord's PDF output seems good. Haven't
tested the MS Word import/export yet, but that looks like it'll come in
really handy when people send me Word files as e-mail attachments. I also
like the fact that it's not as bloated as OpenOffice.

Version 2 for windows?
by Psychopath - Sep 21st 2003 15:00:50
I couldn't find any notice whether there is or will be a version 2 for MS
Windows? On the homepage there's only a download of version 1.99.6.
Thanks!

There will be a 2.0.1 for Windows once some severe problems gets sorted
out.

Just clearing up things on the comments for the benefit of the users:
Yes, there were many 2.0.x versions for Windows, and as of early May 2005,
2.2.x versions as well. Releases tend to be synchonous whenever things go
relatively smoothly.

Just clearing things up for the sake of the record:
No extra packages are needed for spell checking in AbiWord. The AbiSpell
package linked to in the parent comment is for additional dictionaries for
the built-in spell checking engine (en-US is bundled on systems that still
use the built-in spelling engine).
In most systems (notably, at the moment, Windows excepted), the Enchant
spell-checking interface is used, allowing Aspell, Hspell, and other spell
checkers already installed to be used seamlessly, without needing to
install application specific dictionaries.

i love this...
by TheMole - May 23rd 2000 11:21:22
this really is a great program and anyone wanting a decent word processor
should use this, it is quick and well features, apart from the options and
other bits. but i dont know where i would be without this, oh yeah, having
to write my physics coursework out by hand!

This is still far from feature complete
by Hazzl - Apr 22nd 2001 17:00:20
While I have to agree with the previous posters that this is really a
very promising project in terms of speed and memory footprint, the program
is still very far from feature complete. No tables, no footnotes, no
styles, you can't really change the layout (headers and footers), no
auto-hyphenation.
What is there (basic editing, import/export) is really good though, and
surprisingly stable for a program in this stage of development. In another
year or so this will definitively be a serious contender for open source
word processing.

I have to agree that it's not really feature
complete yet, but it is very promising.
I'm a huge fan of export to LaTeX. It was a big
help when I was still figuring out LaTeX and
didn't really know what I was doing yet. While it
does produce ugly LaTeX code, it's workable and
syntactically correct and was a big aid in seeing
how things work.

Just updating this so that page visitors won't be confused by the status
of the project in the past....
Since this original comment was posted, tables, footnotes/endnotes,
styles, complete header/footer support, and several other features (Tables
of Contents, Revisions Tracking) have been added to the program. More are
in the works for future versions, while keeping in mind the focus on
avoiding core bloat.

nice..
by toing - Aug 8th 1999 16:14:05
abi word is probably the nicest word processor that i've ever used. while
it is still missing key features (options namely..) it is still very
useable. i really hope that the developers continue to make a great
program.
