 freshmeat Job Openings
by jeff covey, in freshmeat - Tue, Apr 1st 2003 00:00 UTC

The expansions of the past year have left us in need of some extra help. If you or someone you know would be interested in working at freshmeat, please read this article.

It's been a busy year at freshmeat. In addition to our traditional offerings, we're now including information about themes and Mac OS X projects. The extra burden has stretched our staff unacceptably thin, and we need reinforcements.

We need to fill 10 new Editor positions. These will be our usual fulltime positions with starting salaries of $65,000/year. In addition to the standard health benefits, basic laptop computers and Internet access will be provided. Also, as most of you know, scoop has extensive training in both Swedish and Deep Tissue massage techniques, and will be available for personal sessions during all working hours.

Applicants should have a reasonable knowledge of Unix software and good written English skills. A programming or sysadmin background is useful, but not necessary.

As usual, since these employees will be serving the freshmeat community, the community will help with their selection. If you wish to offer yourself for consideration, please go to #freshmeat on irc.freshmeat.net, give a brief resumé and explanation of why you feel you should be chosen, and answer any questions that are asked of you. Anyone interested in taking part in the selection process should join us there. A log of the discussion will be kept, and a vote will be taken at the end of the day.

If you have any questions, please ask in the channel. Thanks.

Now when you say must live in scoops basement, does that mean that you are only looking for people already living in scoop's basement, or that one would be required to move into scoops basement?

[»] I know someone who could use the job
by mr_skot - Apr 2nd 2003 18:15:15

I keep getting emails from them. They're from Nigeria and apparently they are fleeing the country.
They wanted me to 'hold on' to some cash for them, but I don't even have a wallet.

So I refered them to this site for a job. They were real happy when they saw the salary.

I believe there was a Princess, an Ex-Dictator (he'd probably want his own cubicle) and some representative of an ex-wife of a dictator.

They sounded like real nice people just needing a second chance.

With all the war an everything I would like to quote a great philosopher who said:

It's all true! My mother even asked me "what exactly is on this website?" with that exact same look, and then, when I explained, she exclaimed "Oh! I thought it might be one of *those* sites" :-)

Yes, the very sound of the word 'freshmeat' does seem to cause people outside of the open source world to cast a disapproving glare. Several months ago, I had my girlfriend walk in and ask what I was browsing on the web. After I said 'oh, I'm on the freshmeat site', she stormed out in a sudden, unexplained huff with her arms folded and a very mean look on her face. Several minutes later, the 'light bulb' finally went on in my head and I explained to her what was on the site. I could imagine how much more quickly you would be judged by saying you WORK at Freshmeat, instead of just browsing it.

Erm, yes, depending on where you live. In Indiana, that'd be rather comfortable (e.g., more than any teacher makes) - when my family lived there, my father made $40k working in the church and we were just fine (better off, in fact, than most of our blue-collar neighborhood, and these were real factory jobs, a good deal more important and difficult than flipping burgers).

(BTW, I doubt that a burger-flipping McDonald's job - I'm guessing not much better than minimum wage here? - would run much over $20k.)

Well, I thought you might have been kidding, but I don't know who you are, and there are plenty of spoiled-rich-kid-libertarian techies around - just enough to make the comment feasibly believable as earnest. I figured the chance I might reprimand a true asshole was worth the risk of ending up flamebaited :-)

(Besides, it was also imaginably a simple misunderstanding - that $65k will mean something far different in Silicon Valley than in the semi-rural Midwest ...)

        At any rate, touché :-)

by screwed_up - Apr 1st 2003 01:35:43

The economy turns down and the tech sector generally blows to hell. The US heads to war which doesn't really make things any better. In general, there's a sense of volatility that puts people on an unusual edge. So why not screw with them and offer some work.

This is a lose/lose situation, and I have to say it's rather disgusting either way. If this is a true attempt at a staff expansion, you have picked the single poorest day of the year for it to take place. And this would not have skipped your minds, so it's akwardness would have been known beforehand. If this is an April fools joke, it's praying on the hopes of work of many people at a time that's in extreme poor taste. It takes advantage of peoples weaknesses, asking them to display their life story in a public channel for anyone to watch. Yes, it's voluntary, but they're being baited.

Laugh it off. And remind me not to list any future projects here.

Well, there's always gonna be somebody whose mission in life is to wander around the internet on April F'in Fools day bitching about the April Fool's jokes. Hey, I don't like it either, but for me, it's a matter of functionality, not bitterness.

I'm unemployed (have been since just before Chrismas; good time to lose my job, eh?), but even I thought this was pretty damned funny.

Fine, whatever. Don't list your projects here. Apparently your fragile psyche is more valuable to you than having lots of people helping to make your software better (however indirectly).

Parting words: GET A LIFE. the world is a tough place, and it doesn't stop for anybody. EVER. More information (everything2.com). Life is hard. You deal with it, or you go see a shrink and blame your whole life on anybody but yourself.

You're right, freshmeat is a wonderful place to list projects and receive great community input and support. It is by far the most popular and well developed site of its kind, and it would be stupid not to take advantage of it if possible. But there are limits to everything.

A little research shows that Dominos Pizza is known to support pro-life organizations at the corporate level. Many people see that and choose not to support Dominos or their spending habbits by not purchasing their products. What would freshmeat have to do in order for you to reconsider your opinion of them? Or are you willing to use freshmeats "widely known" resources no matter how they choose to spend their energy?

Whoa! Who are you to tell the guy he is a 'terrible human being'? The Pope or something? Look, I have one full-time and one part-time computer job, both of which were GIVEN to me by my father because of the state of the economy, so I consider myself DAMN lucky for the situation I'm in, and everybody is not so lucky. With this economy, staying employed is LUCK of the draw (ask the people at Enron, who didn't even know the company was acting illegally, or people who worked for airlines and didn't expect Sept. 11th.) So, don't you dare look down your snotty over-privileged little nose a-la-Bill Gates and declare him a 'terrible human being' for having the back-bone to stand up and say that it is sick to publicly humiliate unemployed or poor people, because he is absolutely RIGHT. If you are among the morally bankrupt, great!...but don't look down on him for thinking like a HUMAN, instead of like some kind of circus chimp. By the way, if it's okay to joke about poor/unemployed people, you probably think it's okay to 'joke' about all the people on both sides dying over in Iraq right now? Yeah, right! Poor taste is poor taste. While you're at it, go laugh at some elderly folks suffering from Parkinson's in a nursing home and spit on a couple of homeless people on the way home. I mean, if you're going to stoop low, might as well not stop until you hit rock bottom, right? Get help, buddy.

Or, better yet, let's complain about it, just like everything else, instead of doing the right thing and laughing at it? Dude, get some optimism in your life FAST. Go play some global thermonuclear war or something.

Indeed it'd be a shitty day to offer someone a job. Especially if that person ISN'T you, the one that is unemployed. God knows I'd accept a good job on April 1st if someone genuinely offered me one.

Ever stop to look at the date of the post? Not only is it the first day of April indeed, but the TIME of the post is 00:00 - I'm sorry to point this out, however, if you already noticed it.

You know, I might just go in there and list my resume just for the fun of it. You never know who might notice, someone might actually be in there scouting them and NOT be joking about it. Or maybe someone will notice and recommend me to someone else. Who knows?

    > Laugh it off. And remind me not to list
    > any future projects here.

Your loss! FM is probably one of THE best places to list a project ever. It's done wonders for my game, and I'm sure numerous other small projects have incubated their info at freshmeat and become big because of it. Don't treat fm as some sort of business that is losing market share because you don't list whatever code you decide to write (whether it's crappy, like my project, or slick and awesome like a lot of the other projects listed), IF you indeed wrote the project in the first place.

If not, I won't hold my breath for the fortune-expansion-for-type-a-when-a-means-antagonist-people package you'd submit if you weren't having such a bad day.

Hope April 2nd isn't twice as bad for you. If it turns out to be, just go see a hypnotherapist like in Office Space.

Nothing like trolling on April fools. Given the date and state of the world, it's just to damn easy. "I'm unemplyed and I've got thick skin. Lighten up! RA RA RA!" You people are funny.

And I'm happily employed, no problems there. But it's nice that you've become so comfortable with your situation and befriended your bitterness, to the point that you no longer consider it abnormal, that you think you can so easily recognize those qualities in other people. If you spent as much time with self evaluation and improvement as you did with trying to set people straight and teach them a lesson you might actually make some progress.

Bah. You would do well to follow your own advice. An April
Fool's joke, such as your first message is one thing, but
your holier-then-thou attitude and hypocritical evaluations
      have no place.

Yes, it is pretty sick to ask somebody to undergo an 'interview' in an IRC channel, only to make a fool of them. Also, it's DANGEROUS and stupid, since it's generally not a good idea to humiliate computer programmers, Unix sysadmins, and the like who are likely to pop into the Freshmeat channel on IRC. That's a good way to become a victim of a malicious bot, a net-split, redundant room floods, or worse, to gain a new stalker/serial killer/loony. No matter how 'good' you think you are on a computer, somebody is always better and nothing on the internet is ever truly 'anonymous', not even connecting to IRC with a spoofed IP. (I believe that.) So, it seems a little dangerous to me to publicly humiliate some guy/gal who goes to the IRC 'interview' with the hopes of putting food on the table, then tell him "Hey, its April Fools.' If that guy/gal leaves the IRC room WITHOUT flaming, I would really be concerned. It's always the 'quiet' ones. Unlike other chat rooms where people claiming to be 'hackers' are generally lying, you can't say the same about a chat room full of software developers, and you might very well be inviting a dangerous situation (people are crazy these days!) or a situation where somebody other than you is going to have the last laugh. Besides, it's just REALLY bad karma. Making fun of the unemployed is a good way to end up on public assistance down the line. A better 'joke' would have been something like "Internet Explorer goes open source!": A least that doesn't make fun of some random man/woman trying to feed 6 kids, 2 cats, an elderly grandmother, and cousin 'Blinkie'. 8-)

That's a damn cruel joke to play on a man who's been looking for work for the last eight weeks! A good one, though.

Now if you'd posted that Shrub passed a literacy test, I would have known automagically that we'd passed midnight.

Have a nice war,

Been redundant for over 12, started own business, getting to the breakeven point with no funding apart from my own.

Though I've noticed a big downturn over the past month, it's nice to point at the "war" and blame that, but to be honest it's year end for many companies so they're all busy fiddling their budgets for the next year.

I dunno what the ratio of regular troops
to irregulars (the TA in the UK) are out
there, but I can safely say that not many
will be from the IT Sector.

Over here in the UK a lot of my potential
clients (SMEs) have noticed a sharp
decline in their customers (the general
              public) spending.

              Who am I to argue?

And how nice it would be if some of them were killed, opening new job placements. Of course there are going to be a lot lot more new job opportunities in Iraq (maybe up to 1 million or even more), but if you want to go and work there you should ask a lot of danger money because depleted uranium is spreaded everywhere.

Well, if you're an unemployed doctor and want to fight cancer... Iraq will be the best place to search for a job after the war.

Have a nice day to all unemployed US citizens, 200 billion USD will go to war industry instead of tax cuts and fundings of SME's.

[»] Social Club Membership
by Robert Fuller - Apr 1st 2003 00:45:01

Membership in the Freshmeat Editors Social Club is an employment benefit that candidates should not overlook. Membership is free for all Editors and Sub-Editors, and involves at least two social events monthly and one annual trip abroad.

Social events this month include one evening at the IEEE Book Fest, and one evening of distributed 10 pin bowling.

This year's earlier planned trip to the Baghdad market has been cancelled, but the committee is open to other suggetions for the annual trip abroad.

So if you are a social animal as well as a great Editor, get your application in ASAP!!!

Would anyone actually do anymore than flipping burgers for 65K/year ?

Wow, don't know about you, but, my base salary is only $32,500 a year for being the ONLY, network, security, and internet admin at a fairly large ISP here in west texas...
      soooooooo
Hell yeah, I'd flip burgers for 65K a year.

lol, damn Brian, no offense but your getting ripped :P Even with the shit economy, here in California (Northern) system admin jobs seem to average $75,000/yr.

This thread is quite entertaining though :P
